Profiling D.C.’s own Russian mogul

DirecTV’s gold-loving, miniature giraffe-owning Eastern European mogul? Apparently, they should’ve just done the commercial with Alex Ovechkin.

For a profile in its November issue, GQ had Russian opulence in real life — well, at least the 25-year-old single male NHL hockey superstar version of it. And that life apparently heavily revolves around females and the constant pursuit thereof.

Of course, take out Russian from that equation, and it’s not far from the lifestyle of plenty of young, super-rich American male athletes, who have their own ways of saying, “Boom!” every time a female passes by. They just didn’t choose to talk about it in front of a reporter.

Not that anyone is condoning that behavior, by the way.

Certainly, the GQ profile exposes what is well known — there’s a vast cultural canyon that lies between Moscow and Washington — and Ovechkin’s outsized personality is finding its way amid the different rules on both sides.

Lesson learned: Show off the rare and exotic pets before the favorite nightclubs.
