The Newark Street Dog Park opened this weekend with a price tag of $400,000. Residents raised an additional $25,000 for amenities for the park, located at the intersection of 39th and Newark Streets, N.W.

The park spans more than 10,000 square feet in two enclosed areas. The finish on the park’s gravel pathways is made with 100 percent recycled materials.

The park opened Saturday after council hearings caused months of delay. A fifth dog park adjacent to the Upshur Recreation Center is expected to be complete next month. Designs for an additional dog park between 14th Street and Tennessee Avenue, N.E. are in the works.

All dog parks are built through a public-private partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation.
