All signs pointing toward Howard

Two games into the Maryland Terrapins’ basketball season, this much has been evident: Senior Adrian Bowie is overwhelmed at point guard. And freshman Pe’Shon Howard is not.

Is it time for Maryland coach Gary Williams to turn the job over to Howard — who hit the game-winning shot Wednesday night against College of Charleston — and return Bowie to his familiar role as a valuable backcourt reserve?

With a game Thursday against No. 4 Pittsburgh and Williams fuming about the lack of respect in the rankings accorded to his defending ACC regular-season championship team, will he be compelled to make the move that seems destined?

It says a lot about Williams’ trust in Howard that he put the ball in his hands with the game in the balance Wednesday night. And it says a lot about the confidence of Howard that when the first option (Jordan Williams) was taken away, he improvised and freed himself for the shot, a 15-foot step-back.

While Howard has seized his opportunity, Bowie has looked tentative. In 48 minutes, Howard has hit eight of 11 shots and has 12 assists, five steals, six turnovers and 19 points. In 40 minutes, Bowie has hit six of 12 shots and has five assists, two steals, nine turnovers and 18 points.

Howard’s emergence isn’t the only good news this week for the Terps. On Monday night, point guard Sterling Gibbs, brother of Pitt standout Ashton Gibbs, committed to Maryland.
