Montgomery police officer struck by vehicle

An off-duty Montgomery County police officer and his cruiser were struck by a vehicle in Germantown, police said.

About 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, two separate vehicle collisions were reported on the ramp from eastbound Maryland Route 118 onto southbound Interstate 270. According to initial reports, the combination of rain and a slippery substance was causing vehicles to slide off the road. Police didn’t say what that substance was.

Officer Fabio Chung was in the area and went to the scene to help. While he was outside his marked police cruiser, a vehicle traveling down the ramp slipped and struck him and his vehicle, Montgomery County police said.

Chung, a 5-and-a-half-year veteran of the police department, was taken to a hospital. He was treated and released. No other injuries were reported from the crashes.

Montgomery County police are investigating the crash involving Chung, and Maryland State Police are investigating the other two collisions.
