AOC and Ilhan Omar warn immigrants of impending ICE raids

With U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement expected to conduct a nation-wide roundup of illegal immigrant families to deport them as soon as possible, some outspoken Democrats in Congress are issuing warnings to them through social media.

The New York Times reported the 2,000 that are being targeted have been ordered to be deported, some of them because they failed to appear in court, but continue to remain in the country illegally.

In tweets sent by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, they said they want to make sure people know their rights if ICE agents appear at their homes this Sunday.

“Every person, including undocumented Americans, has rights if they are approached by ICE,” Omar tweeted, adding, “These raids will dehumanize immigrants and tear families apart. This will not make our country any stronger. It will only traumatize children, destroy lives, and make our country less safe.”

The deportations were planned to take place earlier, but were pushed back as some appeared to have disagreements with the execution of the plan. Senior administration officials blamed acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan for leaking the plan to the press.

“I know he has not approved of this operation for months,” one person familiar with those private conversations said. “The president wouldn’t leak that. ICE wouldn’t leak that. There’s only a few people involved in these discussions … The only one who could have shared the details of those operations were Kevin.”

McAleenan denied he was the source of the leaks.
