A Prince William County commuter lot will expand by up to 730 spaces, before it gets torn down for a new intersection at Routes 234 and 1.
The county received nearly $6 million in state funding to expand the 350-space temporary lot on the northwest corner of the intersection. Developer KSI agreed to build a new intersection as part of its agreement with the county to allow construction of the Harbor Station community.
“The plans for the developer to do the interchange haven’t been approved [by the County Board of Supervisors] … so we are going forward with the expansion,” said Tom Blaser, Prince William County’s transportation chief.
Depending on how the new intersection is built, the county must decide on how to configure the new spaces, said Sean Connaughton, Prince William County Board of Supervisors chair.
“Do we add a lot now, understanding that quite a few of them might disappear when the interchange is actually built?” he said.
The lot is expected to be finished by 2009. KSI’s project, which would also extend Route 234 to the river, is currently in the engineering phase.
An official from KSI said that they likely will bid on the expansion project.
“It would be our preference to relocate it in accordance with the interchange plan,” said spokeswoman Cassie Cataline. She added that it was too early to give a timeline or cost figure for the expansion project.
