Peaceoholics co-founder Jauhar Abraham sent out a news release Tuesday that declares the nonprofit group isn’t “politicking” for Mayor Adrian Fenty. Abraham then goes on to attack D.C. Councilwoman Yvette Alexander for calling for an audit that would examiner Peaceoholics’ funding and the group’s role in the mayoral race.
Abraham still has a leadership role with Peaceoholics, a group formed to work with at-risk youth in the District, and his Peaceoholics e-mail is listed as the contact for questions regarding the news release. The group’s other founder, Ron Moten, has said he left his leadership position so he could campaign for Fenty, whose administration has given more than $10 million to Peaceoholics. Moten still sits on the Peaceoholics’ board.
Because Peaceoholics is a registered nonprofit group, it is illegal for it to endorse political candidates and to campaign.
“There is absolutely no legitimate basis to accuse the Peaceoholics of politicking,” Abraham said in the release. “It is obvious that in this instance, the councilperson is clearly abusing her position to further her political agenda and fan the flames of suspicion and cast this organization in a nefarious light.”
