STORYLINE:
After a day in which Scottish voters exercised their democratic rights with unprecedented enthusiasm, the country _ and all of Britain_ held its breath as it awaited the results of an independence referendum on whether to dissolve the country’s 307-year union with England.
As the polls closed late Thursday and the vote counting began, many Scots settled in to stay up all night in homes and bars to watch the results. A nationwide count began immediately at 32 regional centers across Scotland.
