A 20-year-old soldier stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was killed Saturday during a live-fire training exercise at Donnelly Training Area near Fort Greely, about 100 miles from Fairbanks, Alaska.
Spc. Nicholas DiMona III of New Jersey died from a gunshot wound, U.S. Army Alaska officials said. He received immediate care from medical personnel at the military base before being airlifted to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident is under investigation.
DiMona had been assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, since April 2018. He joined the Army in July 2017, training at Fort Benning in Georgia before reporting to Alaska last April.
“Nick was an outstanding paratrooper with an infectious personality and an uncanny desire to excel no matter the challenge,” Col. Jason Jones, his brigade commander, said in a news release. “He will be missed by the entire Spartan Brigade. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.”
