Fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who drew the ire of President Trump while temporarily heading the bureau, is set to offer a candid account of his career in a new book announced Tuesday.
The book, titled “The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump,” will be released Dec. 4 by St. Martin’s Press.
“I wrote this book because the president’s attacks on me symbolize his destructive effect on the country as a whole,” McCabe wrote in a press release promoting the publication.
“He is undermining America’s safety and security, and eroding public confidence in its institutions,” McCabe continued. “His attacks on the most crucial institutions of government, and on the professionals who serve within them, should make every American stand up and take notice.”
News of McCabe’s forthcoming book comes almost two weeks after it was revealed federal prosecutors in Washington had impaneled a grand jury to help investigate whether the ex-FBI No. 2 purposely misled government officials over his role in an unauthorized disclosure to a newspaper in 2016.
McCabe, a 21-year veteran of the FBI, was pushed out of the bureau on March 16, two days before he planned to retire on his 50th birthday and collect a full pension. He had stepped up to lead the FBI after Trump fired Director James Comey in May 2017.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions dismissed McCabe after the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General reported “allegations of misconduct” by him. An internal inquiry had been commissioned to determine if information published by the Wall Street Journal in October 2016 about the the FBI’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s email probe was due to an “unauthorized leak.”
McCabe disputed the IG report, claiming he had been authorized to share certain details with members of the press and that he never intentionally misled officials over his involvement.
McCabe was also subject to a range of attacks from Trump, who criticized him for being biased because his wife ran as a Democrat for a Virginia state Senate seat in 2014 and accepted donations from Terry McAuliffe, a high-profile Clinton family supporter.
