Fire and emergency crews are beginning clean-up efforts, after a Thursday storm knocked down trees and power lines.
A few city offices are closed Friday in Alexandria, which was hit hardest by the storm. The Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Center and the William Ramsey, Charles Barrett and Cora Kelly recreation centers are closed. Mt. Vernon Community School and all summer school programs are also closed.
No serious injuries were reported, according to the Alexandria Fire Department.
As Friday morning, about 23,000 Dominion customers were without power and about 17,000 Pepco customers lacked power.
In Prince George’s County, firefighters at the Croom station were stuck inside for about two hours Thursday because a large fallen tree and power lines blocked their exit. About 50 children were also stranded at nearby daycare center, according to Prince George’s County Fire and EMS.
