Kamala Harris: Trump is ‘clearly a racist’

Kamala Harris ripped supporters of President Trump who identify with his rhetoric, likening them “to the lowest common denominator.”

The California senator and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate tore into fringe members of Trump’s base during an appearance Monday in San Diego, California, at the annual UnidosUS conference, two days after 22 people where killed in El Paso, Texas, by a shooter who had published an anti-Hispanic manifesto.

“The fact we have a president of the United States who is clearly a racist, who has clearly been motivated by speaking to the lowest common denominator, has been so busy using what should be the most powerful tool of the president of the United States,” Harris said.

She added, “Because you know when she holds this microphone in her hand, there’s a lot she can accomplish by setting perspective, by elevating public discourse, by reminding people of the accurate version of history of this country and by helping people having a vision of the future in which they can both see themselves.”

Harris had been asked what her hypothetical administration would do to address the country’s immigration system. She used the question to claim Trump is manipulating the crisis at the southern border to beat “people down instead of lifting people up.”

“We are better than this, and we are going to help him get out of the White House, and go back to his reality television show or wherever he came from. He needs to go back,” she said, referencing Trump’s own comments about ‘the squad’ of minority female House Democrats.

During her opening remarks at the event hosted by the country’s largest Latino nonprofit advocacy organization, Harris urged community leaders in the room to continue the “fight” because they were on “the right side of history.”

“When this is all over and this moment passes, we will remember that we were the ones who fought for the best of who this country is,” the senator said.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, Obama administration Housing Secretary Julián Castro, and Sens. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Bernie Sanders of Vermont also spoke at the gathering.
