NEW YORK (AP) — The Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network has renewed its call for criminal charges to be brought against police officers involved in the death of a New York City man in their custody.
Retired detective Graham Witherspoon from the Black Law Enforcement Alliance said on Friday prosecutors could bring murder charges against the officer seen in video putting Eric Garner in a chokehold.

Prosecutors on Staten Island are investigating the July 17 death. The officer seen in the video has been stripped of his gun and badge. Chokeholds are banned under NYPD policy.
Sharpton didn’t attend the press conference following a meeting with the inspector general. Witherspoon said charges would send a clear message.
