Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, is testifying Wednesday before the House Intelligence Committee as part of lawmakers’ impeachment hearings.

Sondland’s 24-page opening statement confirms that there was a quid pro quo in regard to an Oval Office meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump. His statement also says there was a “potential quid pro quo” regarding the suspension of military aid and a public declaration of investigations into Trump’s political rival Joe Biden and the 2016 presidential election.

The Wednesday testimony is the most pivotal of the witnesses called before Congress thus far.
