Michael Guest, who was thought to be a safe incumbent, was forced into a June 28 runoff after he failed to win more than half of the vote against Republican primary opponent Michael Cassidy in Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District.

Cassidy, a former Navy pilot, narrowly led Guest on Wednesday, with neither candidate having over 50% of the vote, which is needed to avoid a runoff. Cassidy attacked Guest for not being conservative enough and for voting in favor of the formation of the House Jan. 6 committee.

“My opponent, Michael Guest, is a pro-amnesty RINO who was one of only a handful of Republicans to vote FOR the January 6th Commission,” Cassidy said on his campaign website. “He’s been silent on the spread of Leftist social values throughout our country and has become a Swamp creature who perfectly embodies the term ‘Republican In Name Only.’ He’s repeatedly voted to fund Planned Parenthood, and his habit of voting for multi-trillion dollar spending bills has earned him a dismal 67% rating from the nation’s leading fiscal conservative organization, The Club for Growth.”

Guest, first elected to the House in 2018, held positions on the Homeland Security Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee, and Ethics Committee. His being forced into a runoff suggests former President Donald Trump’s hold on the Republican Party is still strong, particularly in deep-red strongholds like the 3rd Congressional District, which covers central portions of Mississippi and stretches from the Louisiana state line to Alabama in the east.
