Imagine a world without sight

Christopher Nusbaum is a self-proclaimed “big TV watcher.”

The 9-year-old Taneytown resident enjoys game shows such as “The Price is Right,” “Deal or No Deal,” “Jeopardy” and “American Idol.” Christopher is also blind.

“Sighted people can see the TV. I can?t see the TV, but I can enjoy the shows I watch as much as sighted people can,” Christopher said.

Christopher doesn?t do many things differently from other kids his age.

“I use a cane and I read Braille and that?s about it,” he said.

His mother, Wendy Nusbaum, said she finds herself talking more than usual around Christopher.

“You find you talk a lot more because things that are going on need to be described,” she said.

Christopher was born nine weeks prematurely, and his retinas became detached during birth. Surgery to reattach them was unsuccessful.

Christopher said he doesn?t think about being blind most of the time.

“I think what other kids should know about being blind is that it is a disability, but when you go into things in your life, especially me, I forgetthat I even have a disability,” he said. “It?s such a minor disability for me, just not having eyesight.”
