Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is calling for term limits on the Senate GOP‘s leader — even as he runs to succeed current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
McConnell has been the Republican leader in the upper chamber of Congress since 2007 and is the longest-serving Senate leader in history. The Kentucky Republican announced last week he would be stepping down as leader later this year, with Cornyn and Sen. John Thune (R-SD) both vying to lead the conference after McConnell steps down.
Cornyn offered up a proposal to implement term limits for Senate GOP leader, arguing that more members should have the opportunity to serve in Republican leadership, in a post on X on Tuesday.

“One reason I am running to be the next Republican Leader is because I believe the Senate needs more engagement from all of my colleagues, and that includes the opportunity for any Member to serve in Leadership,” Cornyn said. “I will support a conference vote to change the rules and institute term limits for the Republican Leader.”

The race to succeed McConnell is currently a two-man race after Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) announced he would seek Republican whip instead of Republican leader for the next term.
The Senate GOP will elect a new leader for the conference in November after the elections — when Republicans have a chance to take control of the chamber.
