ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — Consumers Energy says work crews smelled natural gas about 40 minutes before an explosion killed a man in February in suburban Detroit.
The details are in a six-page update given to state regulators last week.

The explosion killed Daniel Malczynski (mal-ZIN’-skee) and destroyed his Royal Oak home. Consumers Energy crews were on his street to dig a new gas line.
The utility says workers knocked on Malczynski’s door after smelling gas but got no answer. They left the scene about 5 p.m., and the explosion occurred seven minutes later.
The CMS Energy Corp. unit says it fired employees who were involved in the boring operation. It’s also taking many other steps, including TV ads about gas safety as well as safety programs in local schools and better communication among employees.
