Arlington County Board Member Barbara Favola beat out her challenger, Jaime Areizaga-Soto, in the notably nasty Democratic primary race for the 31st District state Senate seat.
Reports indicated that Favola won 65 percent of the vote; Areizaga-Soto won 35 percent. About 10,000 people voted.
The race drew attention mainly because of its negative tone. Favola accused Areizaga-Soto of working for environment-spoiling corporations; Areizaga-Soto accused Favola of selling her vote to developers.
Favola will face Republican Caren Merrick in November.
