The United Nations Security Council is voting on a resolution for President Joe Biden’s new ceasefire deal, calling on Hamas to accept the three-phase plan.

In comments before the vote, United States Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood called the resolution “the best, most realistic opportunity to bring at least a temporary halt to this war.” Hamas has allegedly said it views the proposal “positively.”

The U.S. said Israel has accepted the plan, and the council’s scheduling of the motion for Monday afternoon is likely an indication that the resolution will be adopted unanimously.

The final draft of the resolution contains a new provision “underlin[ing]” the plan’s directive that should negotiations take longer than six weeks for the first phase, “the ceasefire will still continue as long as negotiations continue.”

The vote comes just days after four Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7 were rescued by Israel. Hamas holds roughly 120 hostages. Thirty are presumed dead.
