He’s already old news

Maybe Brett Favre should have retired for real this time. The Minnesota Vikings quarterback has looked every bit of his 40 years during the first two games of the 2010 season.

That’s one of the biggest reasons the Vikings — a play away from the Super Bowl a year ago — are off to an 0-2 start after a 14-10 loss at home to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Favre was intercepted three times and charged with a fumble in the end zone that proved to be the game-winning score for Miami. Granted, Favre isn’t working with many weapons at this point. Sidney Rice is still out after hip surgery. Percy Harvin has been ineffective and is playing hurt, too. A miscommunication with veteran wide receiver Bernard Berrian in Sunday’s game appeared to lead to one interception, and a weird tipped ball at the goal line on a pass intended for Harvin led to another. On the fumble, Favre’s arm was hit on a nice rush by Miami linebacker Cameron Wake.

But the result is still the result. He had a 44.3 quarterback rating Sunday and didn’t look all that great in a Week 1 loss at defending champion New Orleans (171 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception).

So are the Vikings in trouble? Not quite yet. They were in both losses, and the defense has allowed just 28 points. There is also a home game against the Lions next week. But Minnesota better win that one. Because after a bye week the Vikings get the New York Jets, Dallas, Green Bay and New England — all playoff teams from last season — and three of those four are on the road. So while it’s too early to count out Minnesota, another loss might do it.

“I didn’t sense it would be this hard. I didn’t envision us staring off 0-2,” Favre said on NFL Network. “But I knew it would be very difficult. … It’s not like we’re going to sneak up on anyone.”
