When winter breaks, break for the beach

In the off-season, dozens of Marylanders frolic in the waters of Ocean City. This time of year, the town you’ve trekked to each summer for sand and souvenirs is still exciting.

But you will likely savor the quiet calm, said Baltimore nightclub owner Abigail Janssens.

“It’s not crowded on the beach, and the restaurants aren’t crowded, either,” said Janssens.

A number of boardwalk hotels have spring rates at a fraction of the primetime cost. For under $100 a night, guests can get a suite at The Best Western Flagship, which has an indoor pool. At the Hotel Monte Carlo on Third Street, you can book an efficiency for about $60 per night.

No matter the season, Maryland crabs are a must. Fager’s Island Restaurant (at 60th on the Bay side) provides diners with a casual experience accompanied by live music.

In the spring, “[Crabs are] good and sweet and not as expensive,” Janssens said.

And don’t forget to indulge in the O.C. favorite — Thrasher’s French Fries. “I just had some the other day,” said Donna Abbott, an Ocean City resident for the past 20 years. “I think they taste almost better in the off-season. It’s that taste of summer that you can enjoy in winter.”
