A nation in mourning

Woah!”

That word ? captured too close to the scene on a low-grade digital camera in between gunfire from Norris Hall ? said what many could not voice in the days and hours after the carnage unfolded in Blacksburg, Va., Monday.

The heart of the nation was wounded in dozens of rounds of automatic gunfire and responded with the desperate attempt to glean meaning from the mayhem ? to ensure those students and professors at Virginia Tech did not die in vain.

We joined those frightened, scarred and mourning families and more than 4,000 Virginia Tech alumni living in the region through images like these ? through memorials, candlelight vigils at campuses and community gatherings.

Whether we can prevent another massacre or get help to the next Cho Seung-Hui before he explodes, we join together in one message of solidarity ? the families of those Virginia Tech children do not suffer alone.
