Coach is not pleased with reaction, however
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan had no problem with DeAngelo Hall’s frustration over his fourth quarter incident — up until he took his helmet off and continued spewing adjectives at the official during Sunday’s 27-12 loss in Pittsburgh.
Hall wants to set up a meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss the play. Hall was ejected and could end up being suspended. However, Vikings safety Harrison Smith was ejected from a game earlier this season for shoving a referee but was not suspended.
Shanahan called receiver Emmanuel Sanders’ block a “full nelson and a complete flip.” Sanders then bumped into Hall when the two got off the ground. Hall ignored Sanders and instead gestured to the official nearby.
“I wish a flag had been thrown initially. It would have been stopped,” Shanahan said. “But you still have to handle yourself the right way. … You have to be strong enough to stay away from it. That’s part of being a good leader and a very smart player.”
Notes » Shanahan wasn’t too pleased with himself over the failed pass from receiver Joshua Morgan back to quarterback Robert Griffin III. Safety Ryan Clark hit Griffin hard as he attempted to catch the pass.
“After looking at that play, you feel like a dumb [expletive],” Shan?ahan said.
He said he ran that play 10 to 15 times in Denver with John Elway as well as in San Francisco with Steve Young. Almost all the time, Shanahan said, defenses play man coverage against this look, leaving the quarterback open.
“If I had to do it over, I would tell Josh, unless he’s wide open …” Shanahan said. “Of course, from his perspective, he was. But it’s part of the growing process for me having a guy throw a pass from the backfield.” …
There wasn’t any mystery as to why Kai Forbath’s extra point was blocked.
“There is no question it was way too low,” Shanahan said. “Way too low.”
