Perhaps it’s time to reel in the Marlins

The Florida Marlins are getting blasted in the national media in lieu of the organization’s financial records being leaked to the website Deadspin earlier this week.

They weren’t the only team whose information was leaked by an anonymous source. The Pirates, Rays, Mariners and Angels also were affected.

But Florida is in the midst of building a new stadium funded primarily by taxpayer money. And the fact that the Marlins made $37.8 million in profit in 2008 is not playing well.

The Yankees also may question why they are helping subsidize a smaller-market team with their revenue-sharing dollars. Florida is on the hook for just $155 million of the new stadium, worth about $634 million. And already Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa is calling for the team to contribute more.
