LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Companies that move grain, fertilizer and other materials on the Arkansas River are waiting to see how federal budget cuts will affect operation of locks along the trade route.

The Army Corps of Engineers manages the waterway and is working to evaluate how the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System will be impacted by in the time ahead.

The corps has had annual budget cuts of 5 percent to 6 percent per year over the past several years. Because of the earlier cuts, the corps has reduced the time locks are operating.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (http://is.gd/ltb6gY ) barge operators say they’ve been meeting with corps officials about how the coming round of cuts will be managed.
