Donald Trump’s eldest son could put his father “over the top” at the upcoming Republican National Convention, officially making him the GOP presidential nominee.
“We would like to be the delegates to put Donald Trump over the top. We deserve to be the state. It would be an honor,” New York GOP chairman Ed Cox told the New York Post on Thursday.
Cox and Donald Trump Jr. will both attend the convention as delegates from New York and are hoping to be one of the last delegations to announce their vote from the convention floor. If the timing is staged correctly, the presumptive Republican nominee’s home state could be the one to put him over the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
“We would love to have Donald Jr. do it,” Cox said of letting Trump’s 38-year-old son read the New York vote. “It would be wonderful to have a member of the Trump family announce that. The whole room would go wild.”
The plan was reportedly introduced by Cox to both Trump and his son and is currently being reviewed by the billionaire’s campaign. Neither of Trump’s other adult children — Ivanka and Eric — are registered Republicans in the Empire State, thus prohibiting them from serving as delegates.
Trump, who carried more than 60 percent of the vote in New York’s April 19 primary, has previously said that his wife and grown children will each speak at the convention between July 18-21.
