Caps 3, Ottawa 1
This one’s not over yet. One quick goal in the third could turn the momentum at home for the Senators. But the Caps again played a strong period. They extended their lead with a goal by forward Jay Beagle – the first of his NHL career in seven regular-season NHL games. Beagle knocked down a clearing attempt by Ottawa forward Jonathan Cheechoo and quickly fired a shot past goalie Brian Elliott. That made it 3-1 Washington.
Semyon Varlamov stopped every shot he saw in the second – all seven of them. But it seemed like most were tough saves to keep Ottawa off the board. John Erskine may have to fight early int he third. Needing energy, Ottawa has tried a couple of time to get Erskine to go. He’d rather not up two on the road. But – as he’s said before – sometimes you have to even in those situations. That situation bears watching. Only two penalties have been called tonight – both on Ottawa. I offer my 100-percent guarantee that changes in the third.
