Christmas bomber forced Obama to rethink security policies
It has been said that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged by reality. Thanks to a Nigerian terrorist wearing exploding underwear, President Obama has just been mugged. All the cobwebs that clouded his thinking about our nation’s security have been cleared away. Prior to this botched attempt to kill Americans, the president was hoping to transform the deep-seated differences dividing America from her enemies through the force of his personality. He was hoping the malevolent ambitions of the world’s despots would simply melt away in his presence, ushering in an era of peace that has eluded previous administrations. By traveling abroad and apologizing for his country, the president thought he could stem the rising tide of terror and hatred towards America. But a failed attempt to blow up a U.S. airliner over Detroit has shattered these delusions. So transformative was the event that Obama is now using the word “terrorism” – a word that up until now, his administration has intentionally avoided. Pregnancy centers tell truth about abortion
Re: “Montgomery County Council targets pro-life pregnancy centers,” Nov. 8
The Montgomery County Council plans to force pregnancy centers – which help women keep their babies by providing needed services for free – to send women to abortuaries because they say pregnancy centers provide “misleading … information..” The council’s criticism stems from reports by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-CA, and the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) claiming that abortion is completely safe and pregnancy centers mislead women by telling them abortion has complications. However, the pregnancy centers are on solid medical grounds. The Institute of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and over 100 studies recognize that abortion puts a woman at risk for subsequent preterm births. Many other scientists also recognize that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer and severe psychological trauma. The Council has a choice: give women the Waxman/NARAL misinformation or let them hear the truth. John Naughton

Pepco wants me to pay for other people’s plasma TVs

Many Pepco customers have done everything they can to lower their electric bills. I know I have. But Pepco now wants to raise rates because some customers have bought large, power-sucking plasma TVs. Why do I have to pay for other people’s plasma TVs? I think Pepco got the idea from California, which wants to ban large-sized plasma TVs. Why isn’t there a standard on the amount of power that large plasma TVs use? And why not go after the manufacturers instead of using this as an excuse to raise our rates? Who’s to say that large plasmas won’t be banned in the future? Let’s also not forget what President Obama said: “Under my cap and trade bill, power rates will skyrocket.” Is Pepco trying to get ahead of the game before cap and trade gets passed? Ed Hinkle
