PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY’-fee) is joining governors from 31 other states in asking the International Olympic Committee to reconsider a decision to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympic games.

Chafee was captain of the Brown University wrestling team in the 1970s.

In their letter, the governors point out wrestling is an ancient sport and has been featured in the modern Olympics since the inaugural games in 1896. They say wrestling is international, with wrestling federations in 180 countries.

The IOC announced its decision last month, but it must still be ratified by the full International Olympic Committee in September. Wrestling advocates have said wrestling can be saved, but it will be a challenge.
