McCarthy says members are ‘concerned’ about Cheney’s ability to ‘carry out the message’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy admitted some members of his party do not believe GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, the party conference chairwoman, can do her job effectively amid her public feud with former President Donald Trump.

McCarthy revealed the admission in a Tuesday morning interview on Fox News after Trump and Cheney exchanged sharp jabs at one another in recent days.

TRUMP’S WHITE HOUSE EXIT DIMINISHES NEVER TRUMP FACTION

“I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message,” McCarthy said. “We all need to be working as one if we’re able to win the majority. Remember, majorities are not given, they are earned.”

He also claimed that her diminished support within the party does not stem from her vote to impeach Trump a second time for his role in the Capitol riot, rather, they’re “more concerned about the job ability to do and what’s our best step forward, that we can all work together, instead of attacking one another.”

Cheney was the highest-ranking of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump a second time for his role in the Capitol riot.

“This is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan. 6. Liz will not do that,” Jeremy Adler, a Cheney spokesman, told the Washington Examiner in response to McCarthy’s interview. “That is the issue.”

McCarthy’s comments come a day after the former commander in chief tried to reclaim the phrase, “The Big Lie,” a line which many critics of Trump have used to dub the fallout of post-presidential election unproven conspiracy theories and legal challenges.

“The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!” Trump said on Monday.

Cheney pushed back less than an hour later saying, “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”

During the House Republicans retreat in Orlando, Florida, last month, Cheney said that Trump will not be the 2024 nominee.

Though Cheney defeated the attempt to oust her from leadership in February, her continued criticism of Trump has irked members of her own party and appeared to put her job security as the third-ranking Republican in peril as well.
