Obama vs. McCain: A Redskins perspective

So what does Redskins safety Reed Doughty think about the Kidney Care Partners mascot (a huge kidney)?

“It looks like a lima bean with some hair,” he said at a Capitol Hill event Thursday, doing his part to un-flatter the organization’s signature symbol.

But Doughty wasn’t the only Redskin with opinions Thursday, especially when it came to politics.

Offensive lineman Randy Thomas (shown) told Yeas & Nays that he supports Sen. Barack Obama for president, calling the senator his “guy.”

But how would Obama and Sen. John McCain fare on the gridiron? Thomas said he’d put McCain at fullback and make Obama a running back. “He could score every time,” Thomas said of Obama. (Wait, but doesn’t that mean McCain would be blocking for Obama? Weird.)

However, Doughty’s pulling for McCain and would put him in as coach. “I think he just seems like he’s been in this business for a long time and he seems very prepared. … I’m personally a Republican, but he’s definitely a good leader.”

OK, but who would win in a fight? Doughty would let a good old-fashioned cage match decide. “Obama’s got the age, but … McCain’s a POW.”

Other Redskins in attendance were tight end Chris Cooley and running back Rock Cartwright. Former Redskin — and current congressman — Heath Shuler stopped by the event to say a few words and reminisce about his football days.

“My days there were fun,” Shuler said. “I hope you guys win more games than I did.”
