Ford defends critters in PSAs

If you haven’t caught Harrison Ford in his new summer blockbuster, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” you can catch him in a concededly less-exciting (but more consequential) screen appearance, courtesy of the State Department.

State has teamed up with Wild Aid and Ford to produce three public service announcements that speak out against wildlife trafficking and encourage people not to purchase goods made from the illegal killing of animals. Starting Thursday (World Environment Day), more than 30 U.S. embassies throughout the world began showcasing the PSAs.

In his best “Clear and Present Danger” voice, Ford says in one ad, “Wehave a situation here: Our planet’s endangered animals are vanishing at an alarming rate.” Or: “When you travel abroad you may be offered some of these products. … An animal has been killed to make one of these. Thanks anyway, drop me a postcard instead.”

No word yet on whether Secretary Condoleezza Rice will don a fedora and play Ford’s sidekick in any upcoming PSAs.
