Clinton ‘needs to keep Democrats unified’

PHILADELPHIALiberal activists are going to keep an eye on Hillary Clinton in the months ahead, warning that the Democratic nominee can’t afford to take their votes for granted — even against Donald Trump.

In an interview with the Washington Examiner‘s “Examining Politics” podcast, a liberal activist and veteran of Sen. Bernie Sanders presidential campaign said that she is pleased with the direction of Clinton’s campaign and her adoption of progressive priorities on education, climate change and other issues.

But Kait Sweeney, press secretary for Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said even against a Republican nominee that many liberals find abhorent, progressive voters would stay home if Clinton strays from the foundation she has built for her campaign.

“Hillary Clinton needs to keep Democrats unified around big, bold progressive ideas,” Sweeney said.

“When she came out for expanding social security, when she came out for debt free college, when she came out for Wall Street reform … that was a huge part of her appeal to primary voters,” she added. “It’s a big part of what’s going to get Bernie supporters on her side, what’s going to keep progressives excited about November, what’s going to keep them voting.”
