Their new restaurant Watershed hasn’t even been open a month, but already Todd and Ellen Gray have a new project on the horizon. What’s the next chapter in the culinary couple’s lives? A cookbook, of course. But this isn’t your ordinary cookbook, Ellen tells Yeas & Nays — “This is a little bit country and a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll.”
While the title of the book, which has been picked up by St. Martin’s Press, is still a work in progress, Ellen says it is packed with recipes that are representative of the Grays’ relationship and unique styles. “It’s about the food that has developed from an interfaith marriage and how much food has influenced us in our lives. Think about it like this: I say potato, you say latka; I say beef, you say brisket, I say puff pastry, you say knish,” Ellen explains.

Celebrating traditional foods from both their Jewish and Episcopal faiths has always been important to the Grays, which is why they have made a point of incorporating those dishes into their menus. “Between our crazy backgrounds and all the food we ate growing up, food is a big part of family and culture. We think this book will tell an entertaining story,” says Ellen.
The book is scheduled to be released next year.
