A top Hillary Clinton staffer called Donald Trump’s suggestion for Russia to hack the Democratic presidential nominee “unacceptable” and “unbecoming.”
“Donald Trump is running to be president of the United States. Inviting a foreign power that is an aggressor at times to the United States to commit espionage for whatever reason — let alone influence the outcome of one of our elections — is unacceptable,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said Thursday on “CBS This Morning.”
Trump’s Wednesday call for Russia to find the more than 30,000 emails missing from the private email server Clinton used while serving as secretary of state are “unbecoming,” Mook said.
“This further proves that he is unfit and does not have the temperament to serve in this capacity,” Mook added.
When asked if the focus on Trump’s comments are to serve as a distraction from the hack and release of Democratic National Committee emails, Mook deflected.
“I think this issue has moved beyond politics and rhetoric,” Mook said. “This is now a matter of national security.”
The FBI has launched a probe into the hacking of the DNC emails, the bureau announced Monday.
Trump has gone on the defensive about his comments. He told Fox News that aired Thursday that he was just “being sarcastic” about Russia returning Clinton’s emails.
