MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island nanny has been indicted on charges that she left a 3-year-old girl locked in a hot vehicle while she shoplifted.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says 37-year-old Christine Nunes was arraigned Friday.
Bail was continued at $50,000. The charges include first and second degree reckless endangerment, child endangerment and petit larceny.
Authorities say a pedestrian notified a Target employee in Hicksville on June 24 after seeing the sweating child in the vehicle with the windows rolled up. They say she had been there about 40 minutes.
The worker called police. The little girl received hospital treatment.
Newsday has reported that outdoor temperatures reached the low 80s that day.
Attorney David Ledgin described his client as “caring” but “troubled.” She has pleaded not guilty.
