HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Dozens of residents voiced their concerns during a public forum to discuss a North Carolina real estate group’s interest in purchasing the old jail and surrounding properties from Forrest County.

The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/13D9oOx ) among the concerns heard repeatedly Thursday night were devaluation of property, undermining the efforts of private investments and influx of low-income renters to the proposed Section 42 housing units.

Landmark Group officials assured those in attendance that Section 42 tenants must be employed and can make up to 60 percent of the median income for the area, meaning around $22,000 for individuals and $31,600 for a four-member household.

Landmark has proposed a $9.75 million renovation of three buildings in downtown Hattiesburg.

Forrest County made the move to its new jail last fall.
