At least two Montgomery County Democrats said Monday that they are considering running for the seat being vacated in November by Maryland Attorney General Joseph Curran, who has held the office for nearly 20 years.
Montgomery County State?s Attorney Doug Gansler said he would announce his plans May 15. He would not say whether he intends to run, but has long been rumored to be gearing up to do so. He said he would spend the next week talking to state leaders, including Curran.
“After 48 years in public service, Joe Curran deserves this to be his day, this week his week,” Gansler said. “I?ll make my plans next week.”
County Council Member Tom Perez, D-District 5, whose candidacy for the seat has also been the source of speculation, said Monday that he would run. A formal announcement will not be made for several weeks.
Perez has not chosen a campaign manager.
“We?ve been crisscrossing the state for the better part of the year listening to people, learning what people think of the AG?s office,” he said. “We?re building a team and we have a number of people coming aboard after we make that announcement.”
Curran, a Democrat who has served as Maryland?s chief legal officer since 1986, announced in Baltimore early Monday that he would not seek re-election to a sixth four-year term.
