Fire at St. Elizabeths high-security dorm

St. Elizabeths Hospital patients and staff were evacuated after a small fire broke out at a high-security dorm area, D.C. fire officials said.

D.C. authorities got the call shortly before 4 p.m.,Wednesday at the psychiatric hospital that houses President Reagan shooter John Hinckley and James Swann, the serial killer known as the Shotgun Stalker.

Patients were moved to a secure area while firefighters finished putting out the fire that was had been contained and mostly extinguished by the new sprinkler system, D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said.

One adult female patient was taken to a local hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

The fire involved a mattress and other combustibles, Piringer said. Investigators were still on scene early Wednesday evening.
