Motorists can expect traffic to get even worse along an already congested 1.5-mile stretch of Georgia Avenue between the Capital Beltway and Veirs Mill Road as construction crews this week begin resurfacing as part of a $3.2 million improvement project, transportation officials said.

The Maryland State Highway Administration will also be installing new ADA-compliant sidewalks along the roadway and replace curbs and storm water systems, officials said.

The improvements are part of an overall effort to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety in rapidly growing area, and the project is expected to be completed by late summer.

More than 60,000 vehicles each day pass along that section of road, which includes the intersection of Georgia and Forest Glen Road.

A recent study found that intersection to be the worst in the D.C. metro area in terms of congestion and delays.

With the new construction, motorists should expect daytime single-lane closures along Georgia Avenue between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and night closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. Arrow panels, variable message signs, traffic barrels and temporary traffic signs will guide motorists through the work zone, officials said.
