Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., declined on Monday to wade into the weekend Twitter battle between President Trump and Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.
McConnell deflected multiple questions back in Kentucky about the barbs between the two Republicans after they went public with their fight.
“Sen. Corker is a valuable member of the Senate Republican caucus and he’s also on the Budget committee and a particularly important player as we move to the floor on the budget next week and he’s an important part of our team,” McConnell said in Kentucky when asked about the feud, according to the Associated Press.
When pressed further about Corker’s remarks about Trump, McConnell reiterated that the Tennessee Republican is “an important part of our team.”
McConnell’s remarks came after Trump went on a Twitter barrage Sunday morning and said Corker “begged” for his endorsement before opting against a re-election run and “didn’t have the guts” to seek a third term.
Corker fired back by saying the White House has become an “adult day care center” and that someone missed their shift earlier in the morning. Sources also disputed Trump’s claim that he said he wouldn’t endorse him in 2018 if he ran for re-election, claiming that Trump repeatedly said he would back him if he sought a third term.
The Senate is out on recess this week.
