Clapper joins DC security think tank
NEW LONDON, Conn - Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James Clapper, current director of National Intelligence, spoke to the Corp of Cadets, March 23, 2016, as the 2016 Hedricks Fellow Clapper served as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency from 1992 until 1995, was the first Director of Defense Intelligence within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and simultaneously the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, was the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency from September 2001 until June 2006, and on June 5, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Clapper to replace Dennis C. James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, is joining a Washington think tank that focuses on national security and defense policies.

Clapper was named Tuesday as a distinguished senior fellow for intelligence and national security for the Center for a New American Security, the group announced Tuesday. He will also join the group’s board of advisers.

The group is led by Michele Flournoy, former undersecretary of Defense for policy under former President Barack Obama, and bills itself as an independent and nonpartisan research institution.

Clapper served as Obama’s director of national intelligence from 2010 to 2017 and has come under fire for the National Security Administration’s bulk collection of data of millions of Americans’ phone calls. He also has

taken center stage in Congress’ probe of Russian interference in the U.S election, testifying Monday that he still has not seen any evidence that Russian foreign nationals ever colluded with the Trump campaign.

He announced his plans to retire at the end of Obama’s term shortly after the election in November 2016.
