Hall has record day

DeAngelo Hall tied an NFL record with four interceptions, which was a good thing for one reason: he had four relatives in the stands so each one was able to leave with a game ball.

“To have four in one game is mind-blowing,” Hall told reporters afterward.

But the impressive part is how different each interception was and what it revealed about Hall.

Here’s a breakdown:

1.    In the third quarter, Hall said he anticipated Devin Hester running a skinny post. Instead he ran a curl. That should have resulted in a completion, but Hester never came back for the ball and Hall made a terrific adjustment. He looped around to his right – again, playing for the post – and dove in front. Not many corners could make this play. For starters, most would have played it safe and tried to break up the pass over the top. But Hall looks for every chance to record a pick.

Hall clearly paid attention to the Bears touchdown drive near the end of the first half. They had used a lot of three-step drops by Jay Cutler to negate the pressure. On the third step, Hall drove on the ball and this was the result.

2.    Hall is a former receiver so his hands are good. Unlike, well, you know. With an all-out blitz, including Carlos Rogers blitzing from the left,  Cutler threw off his back foot. Naturally he threw behind the receiver and Hall made a one-handed grab and returned it 92 yards for a touchown. Rogers helped lead the charge downfield, running interference late to escort Hall into the end zone.

3.    Once more Hall was helped out by a Bears receiver. This time Johnny Knox failed to continue the route as Hall jumped him inside, taking away the slant. So Knox sort of stopped. Cutler didn’t. He threw in that direction and Hall was there for another easy pick. It was a good read by Hall and wasn’t about instincts or anything else. Just a smart play. One more thing: it helped that Hall was in press coverage on the play.

4.    I don’t know what Cutler was doing on this play. The Bears had run hitches at Hall an awful lot. Finally, they took a shot deep. Except that Hall backed off at the snap, negating the play. Cutler didn’t see it that way and he heaved it downfield and Hall had himself another easy pick.
