Souray’s in a not-so-sweet spot

Call him the NHL’s version of Randy Moss. Defenseman Sheldon Souray made it clear last season he was done with the Edmonton Oilers — the NHL’s worst team in 2009-10.

So the organization obliged, leaving him off its training camp roster. Unfortunately — as talented a player as Souray is — no one wants a 34-year-old who missed 45 games last season and takes up $5.4 million in valuable salary cap space the next two years.

So Souray this week finds himself with the Capitals’ organization — only not the way he had hoped.

The Oilers loaned him to Hershey of the American Hockey League, meaning they pay his salary but he doesn’t count against their cap. Meanwhile, Washington has a big defenseman who had 53 points as recently as 2008-09 just sitting on its AHL team.

Would the Caps take a shot at Souray on re-entry waivers, where they could split his cap hit with Edmonton? Maybe not given his reputation. But they’ll know whether he’s worth the price.
