Provident Bankshares sells six branches

Provident Bank?s parent company, Provident Bankshares Corporation, sold six of its Virginia branches to Union Bankshares. Union Bankshares will acquire the deposits, which total approximately $46 million, and facilities.

“The sale of these branches is consistent with our previously stated strategies to optimize our branch network and to focus on our core markets ? the high-growth metropolitan areas of Baltimore, Washington and Richmond,” said Gary Geisel, president and chief executive officer of Provident Bankshares Corporation.

The affected branches are in Charlottesville, Middleburg, War-renton and Winchester. Employees of the branches will be offered employment with Union Bankshares.
