ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Classes are returning to normal at the U.S. Naval Academy as all civilian faculty return after being furloughed last week due to the partial federal government shutdown.
Cmdr. John Schofield, an academy spokesman, said Monday that “everything is back up academically.”

Last week, the academy had to cancel about 20 percent of its classes due to furloughs to civilian faculty and staff. That meant military faculty members picked up classes to substitute for furloughed civilians. Foreign language courses were heavily affected and some chemistry, physics and engineering labs could not be run because civilian technicians were absent.
But on Saturday, the Pentagon announced that it would order furloughed civilian employees back to work this week.
