When it comes to former politicians, former veep Al Gore is clearly more popular than former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (sorry Tom, but it’s true).
But that doesn’t mean that Daschle can’t try to get to Gore’s level. Speaking at Borders bookstore in downtown Washington on Wednesday night, Daschle promoted his book on the U.S. health care system, “Critical.”

He said, “I’m trying to do for health care what Al Gore did for climate change.” And: “I expect an Oscar next year and a Nobel Peace Prize after that.”
But if Daschle and his health care ideas are to become the cool kids on the block, it won’t happen through elected office. Daschle swore (wink, wink) that he’s not trying to create a job for himself by hawking a health care plan during an election year.
“I hope they’ll find someone more qualified than myself,” said Daschle. “I’m not looking for employment.”
Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard that before.
