WESLACO, Texas (AP) — A South Texas man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally striking a teenage girl with his car while he was high.

A judge delivered the punishment to Lucio Rodriguez on Thursday. He killed 17-year-old Maria Lopez while she was checking the mail at her Weslaco home in May 2013.

Authorities say he was driving at a high speed and was high on marijuana and Xanax. He had a drunken driving charge from 2010 pending at the time of the collision.

His attorney called the death an accident and had asked for probation.
