Maryland coach likely to wait until kickoff to reveal if O’Brien, Brown will start against Clemson

Maryland coach Randy Edsall appears determined to keep everyone in suspense over the Terrapins quarterback situation, saying he’s not likely to reveal his choice until “game time,” Saturday night, when Maryland (2-3) plays host to No. 8 Clemson (6-0).

“It’s a situation where we’re going to evaluate that situation like we do at every position on a week-by-week basis,” Edsall said of his choice between struggling starter Danny O’Brien, who completed just one of six passes in Saturday’s 21-16 loss at Georgia Tech, and C.J. Brown, who completed only four of 17, but rushed for 116 yards on nine carries, sparking a Terps comeback with a spectacular 77-yard touchdown run.

Edsall also remained typically mum on injuries, not revealing the status of junior linebacker Demetrius Hartsfield, saying to wait for Thursday’s weekly injury report to the ACC.

There is no disguising the status of senior guard Andrew Gonnella, whose college career is certainly over after suffering a compound leg fracture. Sophomore Pete White would receive “No. 1 consideration” to replace Gonnella, Edsall said.

Edsall had high praise for the Terps’ defense, which held Tech to season lows in points and yards (386). Junior tackle Joe Vellano (14 solo tackles, 6 assists) had an incredible game against the Tech triple-option. Thirteen of his stops came on plays where Maryland held Tech to four or fewer yards.
